Maketa Groves

AUTHOR

Maketa Groves was born and raised in Detroit, Michigan, in an area of the city known as “Black Bottom,” an area immortalized by the great blues singer John Lee Hooker. Her father introduced her to poetry at an early age, and by the time she was eight, she could recite Poe’s “The Raven” by heart. As a college student, and influenced by the Beat Generation, she traveled extensively throughout the United States. She has worked as a gas station attendant, a camp counselor, and an ad writer, and, more recently, as Artist-in-Residence in schools, prisons, and community centers. Her poems have appeared in a number of magazines and anthologies. Red Hot on a Silver Note is her first book of poetry.
