Carlos Vázquez

VISUAL ARTIST

Carlos Vázquez was born March 12, 1963 in Mexico City. He studied physics at Universidad Autónoma Metropolitana-Iztapalapa in Mexico, and after being allowed to sit in on some art classes decided to change his focus to the field he’d previously only pursued as a personal hobby: art. He studied art at Academia de San Carlos, Escuela Nacional de Artes Plásticas and Universidad Nacional Autónoma de Mexico. He moved to New York City in 1991, where he continued his studies at the School of Visual Arts and the Art Students League, while teaching Spanish and art at various schools in New York, including Central Park East Secondary School, Landmark High School and Coalition School for Social Change. In 1994, he spent time in Chiapas teaching art to children in Lacandona Jungle. Vázquez’s artwork has been exhibited in Mexico and the United States, including Museo Nacional de la estampa, Museo del Chopo, cultural house of Tlalpan and Galeria el Laberinto del Minotauro in Mexico, and the Cork Gallery and Hobble Institute at John Hopkins University in the United States. In addition to his illustrations for Curbstone’s América Is Her Name, his artwork has been published by Harcourt Brace (New York), CONACYT (Mexico City) and Excelsior (Mexico City).
